National Safe Boating Week shoves off on May 20

The 2023 National Safe Boating Week starts Saturday, May 20, and runs through Friday, May 26. During this week-long event, Flotilla 99, Cape Haze, will be distributing boating safety information at the area launch ramps, restaurants and fuel docks. (Last year, more than 5,000 pieces of boating safety information were handed out.) Flotilla 99 will also be performing free vessel safety checks. Call 941- 249-5848 to schedule yours.

Considering the stunning fact that 86% of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket, the official nationwide observance of Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day will be on Friday, May 19. Don’t be afraid to sport your personal flotation device (PFD) at your place of employment, to show your co-workers and friends that the new inflatable PFDs are extremely comfortable to wear. The life you save could be that of your best friend or a family member.

This month’s Public Education class is “Suddenly In Command!” — a course designed for the person(s) not normally at the helm but need to know what to do if the captain suddenly becomes incapacitated. For more information, call 941- 249-5848 or email abbrengle.uscgaux@gmail.com
